Operational Results for the Third Quarter of Fiscal 2005

  1. Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC; Governor: Kyosuke Shinozawa) released operational results today for the third quarter (October-December) of fiscal 2005.  A summary of the results is given below.  See the Appendix for a breakdown by financial instrument.

    1. Overall Commitments

    56 commitments totaling 391.8 billion yen were made in the third quarter of fiscal 2005.  The details are as follows:  

    (1) International Financial Operations (IFOs)
    (a) Loans and Equity Participation
    43 commitments were made in the total amount of 318.1 billion yen.  They included overseas investment loans in support of oil resource development in Kazakhstan and business expansion for Japanese manufacturers in India, as well as an export loan in support of exports of equipment from Japan for a railway construction project in Venezuela.

    (b) Guarantees
    10 commitments were made in the total amount of 61.7 billion yen.  They covered the yen-denominated bond (Samurai bond) that the government of Colombia issued to raise yen funds in the Tokyo market and private-sector transactions including the import of aircraft from the United States.


    (2) Overseas Economic Cooperation Operations (OECOs)
    3 ODA loan commitments were made in the total amount of 12 billion yen.  They supported the Sewerage System Development Project aimed at improving the environment and hygiene in Morocco and the Fourth Poverty Reduction Support Credit (PRSC4) to help policy and institutional reforms designed to achieve economic growth and poverty reduction in Vietnam.  

    2. Disbursements, Repayments and Outstanding Amounts

    Disbursements amounted to 438.2 billion yen, while repayments were 581 billion yen in the third quarter of fiscal 2005.  As a result, outstanding loans and equity investments reached 19,146.6 billion yen and outstanding guarantees stood at 1,006.8 billion yen at the end of the third quarter.  The details are as follows:

    (1) International Financial Operations (IFOs)
    Disbursements amounted to 273.5 billion yen, while repayments were 461 billion yen.  Outstanding loans and equity participation totaled 7,663.5 billion yen and outstanding guarantees stood at 1,006.8 billion yen at the end of the third quarter.

    (2) Overseas Economic Cooperation Operations (OECOs)
    Disbursements amounted to 164.7 billion yen, while repayments were 120 billion yen.  Outstanding loans and equity investments totaled 11,483.1 billion yen at the end of the third quarter.

    3. Others

    Aside from the loan, investment, and guarantee operations above, JBIC signed Memorandums of Understanding (MOUs) with government agencies in Russia, Kazakhstan, Thailand, and Malaysia to support the business activities of Japanese firms and the development of the business environments in these countries.  To help achieve the Millennium Development Goals, JBIC also signed a cooperative agreement with the UNDP.
