On December 11, Takashi Hongo, Head of JBIC's Environment Finance Engineering Department, made a presentation titled, “Emissions Trading for Biodiversity?”
He described recent developments in new financing mechanisms to protect biodiversity, pointing out the need for quantification and its agenda. Then he stressed the importance of building an investment model by citing the case of sandfish in which fish catch was successfully restored. He concluded his presentation by stating that JBIC would contribute to these efforts by drawing on its overseas network built up through past operations and its experience in environmental business.
The presentation was delivered to the packed audience, with some people standing, who intensely listened to the speaker. The biodiversity corner set up in the event site also drew a large number of people, indicating a high level of interest in the upcoming tenth meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP10) in 2010.
JBIC intends to participate in similar events to inform the public on its efforts and disseminate information on how to cope with global warming.
