Powertech Business Forum: New and Sustainable Energy Technologies to Meet Climate Change
Speakers in the Business Forum A two-day conference: “Powertech Business Forum: New and Sustainable Energy Technologies to Meet Climate Change” was held on September 9-10, 2009, in Manila, the Philippines.
The central topics of the conference were renewable energy and clean energy. Representatives from the country’s power sector made presentations on their current efforts. The JBIC staff participated in the conference as a speaker.
Chief Representative Sumio Ishikawa making a presentation In the fifth session held on the second day of the conference, Chief Representative of JBIC’s Manila office Sumio Ishikawa made a presentation titled “Initiatives for the Power Sector and Climate Change Mitigation.”
He first looked back on the previous loans provided by JBIC to support development in the power sector of the Philippines and then explained a recent credit line extended to the Development Bank of the Philippines to develop CDM projects.
He also described the JBIC Facility for Asia Cooperation and Environment (FACE) established in April 2008 and the Leading Investment to Future Environment (LIFE) Initiative launched by the Government of Japan in March 2009 to be implemented by JBIC, touching on the possibility of undertaking green power projects and energy efficiency improvement projects by utilizing these current programs.
In closing the conference, Secretary of the Department of Energy Angelo T. Reyes stated that the Renewable Energy Act was legislated in December 2008 and its Implementing Rule and Regulation (IRR) were approved a short while ago. This has opened the way for renewable energy projects to receive various preferential tax treatments.
JBIC will continue to actively support projects in the Philippines where Japanese affiliates get involved.
