Global warming is arguably the central issue of the environmental agenda in the 21st century.
The Japanese industry has developed world-class cutting-edge technologies for environmental improvement and energy saving, by drawing on the lessons learned from its experience of pollution-related problems during its high growth period, as well as in response to the reality of its dependence on imports for most of its mineral and energy resources from other countries.
Let us take a look at some of JBIC's activities to address global environmental problems, in its role as an official financial institution under its designated mission and responsibilities.

The commitment period for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions under the Kyoto Protocol started in 2008. Japan has an obligation to reduce GHG emissions by 6% from the base year 1990 level. However, it is difficult for Japan to achieve such significant reductions solely through domestic emission reduction efforts, as it already boasts advanced energy conservation technologies. For this reason, it is worthwhile for Japan to set its sights on achieving this target by participating in emission reduction projects in developing countries and transition economies, and in carbon trading.

Japanese advanced energy-saving technologies are a key to addressing global environmental issues, while serving as a significant weapon of Japanese firms for expanding their scope of overseas business. This section reports on JBIC efforts to provide support in financing and knowledge for disseminating Japanese energy-saving technologies across the world.

As environmental problems have become increasingly important, financial institutions have also shown an ever higher awareness of environmental considerations.This section reports leading efforts made by JBIC for environmental considerations in the project process.
