Research and Studies

In addition to the investment climate and other information services for overseas business development, JBIC conducts its own research, and studies and shares specialized knowledge with firms and other government agencies.

The Survey Report on Overseas Business Operations by Japanese Manufacturing Companies

The Survey Report on Overseas Business Operations by Japanese Manufacturing Companies is an annual report of the survey conducted by Research Division, collecting the voices of Japanese manufacturers since 1989. The objective of the survey is to assess the current trends, agenda and future prospects of the overseas business operations of Japanese manufacturing companies engaging in business operations abroad. In FY2007, the survey examined "competitors in the global sales market" and "important domestic and overseas efforts to maintain and improve international competitiveness," apart from such regular topics as "the medium-term prospects of business operations," "evaluation of overseas business performance" and "promising countries and regions for overseas business operations." The findings of this survey have served as the basic source of information for understanding economic relations between Japan and other countries, and have received significant attention, often being reported in the newspapers. The findings are not only utilized by Japanese companies in expanding operations overseas, but also by foreign official agencies for promoting Japanese investment.

JBIC provides findings of this survey to a broad audience as a published report and in seminars. In December 2007, a seminar, the Overseas Investment Seminar: Trends and Agenda of Japanese Overseas Business Operations, was organized jointly by the Osaka branch of JBIC(at that time), the Japan Institute for Overseas Investment (JOI) and Osaka Chamber of Commerce and Industry (OCCI), supported by the International Business Organization of Osaka (IBO) and the Osaka International Business Promotion Center (IBPC). The seminar provided information on the trends and developments of Japanese foreign direct investment activities, using the latest data. In the seminar, the data narrowed its focus onto firms in the Kansai region and presented the data for such firms, which revealed the special characteristics of the firms in the region. A panel discussion was also held by experts on "the earning structure of Japanese firms in Asia," "promising countries for overseas business operations," and "a practical agenda for overseas business development of SMEs," which was followed by the question and answer session.

A similar seminar was held abroad as well. In March 2008, the Seminar on Japan's Foreign Direct Investment and Indonesia as Its Destination was held in Jakarta, Indonesia. The event, which constituted part of the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations, was held in collaboration with Indonesia's Investment Coordinating Board (BKPM), the Jakarta Japan Club (JJC) and the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN). Based on the survey findings, the seminar presented the trends of Japanese corporate investments to the staff of the Indonesian Government and to companies, as well as the trends of Japanese subsidiaries and affiliates operating in the country. The discussion focused on how Indonesia was evaluated and what needs there were for drawing more investment. These topics captured the significant interest of the governments and business communities of both countries.
