The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) held an economic policy dialogue with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) on the themes of technology and jobs on March 20, 2018. Experts from the Economic Research and Regional Cooperation Department of ADB and staff members from the Country Credit Department of JBIC participated in the dialogue.
Titled "Industrial Automation in Japan, "the dialogue was a follow-up session on the "Jobs in Asia" workshop held at ADB last November. JBIC presented an analysis of current state of industrial robot investments in Japan. JBIC pointed out that other countries are enhancing automated capital equipment by making robust investments, yet investments in Japan are stagnant and capital stock is slightly decreasing, particularly due to poor performance and long-term stagnation of growth in the electrical and electronics industry since the 2000s.
After JBIC's presentation, ADB commented that the results were similar to those of ADB's research in that more industrial robot investments are made in capital-intensive industries. In addition, the participants shared their understanding on several topics: the relationship between individual companies' decisions regarding industrial robot investment and wages and labor regulations of each country, the patterns of industrial robot investment in both developed and developing countries in response to changes in global supply chain, and the significance of evolving automation in the service industry and light industry (textile industry) on the Asia-Pacific economy.
JBIC will continue to exchange opinions with ADB to further reinforce the relationship, while building an in-depth understanding of policy issues in Asia.
