The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) hosts a joint seminar with Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Limited (DMICDC)
A seminar report on the India Industrial Corridor Seminar at Gurugram

At the conference

The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), on June 20, 2018, co-hosted a seminar with Indian company Delhi Mumbai Industrial Corridor Development Corporation Limited (DMICDC) at the Leela Ambience Gurugram in Gurugram (formerly Gurgaon) near Delhi, where a cluster of Japanese companies are located. Titled the "India Industrial Corridor Seminar at Gurugram," the seminar was attended by approximately 90 attendees from government agencies, financial institutions, Japanese companies and others.

The Delhi-Mumbai Industrial Corridor (DMIC) is a joint project led by Japan and India to intensively develop industrial parks and other infrastructure along 150 kilometers on both sides of a Dedicated Freight Corridor(DFC) that covers a distance of 1,483 kilometers between Delhi and Mumbai, the two largest cities in India. In 2013, JBIC signed an agreement subscribing to the new stocks issued by DMICDC, and it has been providing support for the formation of infrastructure development projects in the areas covered by the DMIC.

The development of the DMIC region has materialized mainly through the development of smart cities, including industrial parks, and private companies are increasingly interested in the region. Consequently, in anticipation of the commencement of the DFC operation and clustering of companies, development projects are under way for peripheral infrastructure, such as a multi-functional logistics hub to support the manufacturing industry. In light of these circumstances, JBIC co-hosted this seminar with DMICDC to introduce to Japanese companies in India the efforts undertaken and functions served by both institutions.

In the opening remarks of the seminar, Ichiro Hayashidani (JBIC's Chief Representative for the Representative Office in New Delhi) explained the purpose of the conference and expressed his gratitude to the attendees. Then, Mr. Alkesh Sharma (CEO & Managing Director of DMICDC) delivered his speech, stating that he hoped Japanese companies would further invest in the DMIC region in the future because applying Japan's advanced technology in the huge market of India would benefit both countries.

Following the opening remarks, Mr. Yasujiro Miyake (Counselor of the Embassy of Japan in India) offered a guest speech. This was the second DMICDC seminar following the first one held in August 2016. In his address, he stated that he looked forward to the further development of the area between Delhi and Mumbai, where more than 60% of the Japanese companies in India are located. He hoped development will progress through the functions of DMICDC, which will improve the investment environment in the area.

In the keynote speeches, Mr. Abhishek Chaudhary (Vice President of Corporate Affairs & Company Secretary of DMICDC) spoke first and explained the functions of DMICDC and the progress on the ongoing project of smart city development including industrial parks, and mentioned that foreign companies were starting to invest in the DMIC region. He also stated that he hoped Japanese companies would make specific investments in the area in the future.

Mr. Ichiro Oshima (Director of DMICDC Logistics Data Service Ltd.) spoke next, explaining that the logistics infrastructure of India was advancing through the logistics visualization services provided by the company, and that he hoped to contribute to the development of the country.

Mr. Takayoshi Tange (Senior Representative of JICA India office) spoke next and explained the status of the development of the DFC, potential business opportunities for Japanese companies that would arise after the commencement of DFC operation, comparison of freight business models of Japan and India, and opportunities for private companies to tap into the operation of logistics parks.

Next, Mr. Denichiro Yamada (expert at the National Highways Authority of India) explained the National Highways Development Project (Bharatmala project) which was announced by the Indian government in October 2017, and the status of road development in the DMIC region.

Ichiro Hayashidani (JBIC's Chief Representative for the Representative Office in New Delhi), who was the last speaker at the seminar, explained JBIC's track record of support provided to Japanese companies in alignment with the needs of India. He also expressed JBIC's goals pertaining to the future development of the DMIC region, including the support structure of JBIC and support measures for the DMICDC project implemented through JBIC.

In the closing remarks, Mr. Katsuhiko Murayama (advisor to DMICDC) expressed his appreciation to the attendees, and concluded the conference by expressing DMICDC's intention to help Japanese and Indian companies in the DMIC region expand their businesses globally by leveraging the strong cooperative relationship between JBIC and DMICDC. After the conference, the attendees from Japan and India had a chance to get to know each other at the reception.
