JBIC's Response to Global Financial Turmoil

2009-1-15
Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC)

In response to the global financial turmoil, JBIC has launched two facilities as an exceptional measure to support exports and overseas business operations of Japanese firms. These facilities are: supplier's credit (S/C) to finance Japanese exports to developing countries (credit for exporters); and loans for major domestic firms to finance their investment projects in developing countries (overseas investment loans). They were established as a temporary measure to be terminated at the end of March 2010 based on the Immediate Policy Package to Safeguard People's Daily Lives decided by the Ministerial Meeting on Economic Measures on December 19, 2008, and the public notice issued by the Ministry of Finance on December 25, 2008.

The facilities are:

1. Supplier's Credit (S/C) for Exports to Developing Countries

2. Loans for Investment Projects in Developing Countries through Major Japanese Companies (Overseas Investment Loans)*1

  1. *1 JBIC has been able to provide loans for domestic firms to finance their projects that help secure a stable supply of resources to Japan (including acquisition of interests in resource development) and the projects undertaken by domestic small and medium enterprises in developing countries. This measure will provide loans for domestic firms to finance, as an exception, their other projects located only in developing countries.
