JBIC Holds Forum with Indian Think Tank ORF and Keizai Doyukai (Japan Association of Corporate Executives) to Strengthen Japan-India Relationship

On March 6 and 7, 2024, the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) held Raisina Roundtable @ Tokyo (Raisina Tokyo) jointly with Observer Research Foundation (ORF) of India and Keizai Doyukai (Japan Association of Corporate Executives) under the aegis of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan. The Raisina Dialogue is held every year in India to discuss economic security issues, and now, Raisina Tokyo has been established as a new international conference in Japan. The roundtable aims to serve as a place for industry, government, and academic experts to exchange ideas under themes, such as geopolitics, international affairs, the recycling society, the transition to an eco-friendly society, and digitalization, to strengthen cooperation between Japan and India.

After opening remarks by Mr. MAEDA Tadashi, Managing Director, Chairman of the Board of Directors of JBIC, Dr. Samir Saran, President of ORF, and Mr. NIINAMI Takeshi, Chairperson of Keizai Doyukai and President and CEO of Suntory Holdings Ltd., keynote speeches were delivered by Mr. SUGA Yoshihide, Chairman of the Japan-India Association and the 99th Prime Minister of Japan, Mr. SAITO Ken, Minister of Economy, Trade and Industry, and Ms. KAMIKAWA Yoko, Minister for Foreign Affairs. In the speeches, the speakers paid their respects to the leadership of the government of India, which held G20 Summit meetings successfully last year, and they expressed their will to continue working closely together for further development of the relationship between the two nations. They also called for the co-creation of novel solutions through dialogue and collaboration; strong promotion of Women, Peace and Security (WPS); realization of global “economic resilience and economic security” as well as “inclusive and sustainable growth”; and further development of the partnership, including through the Quad (Australia, India, Japan, and the U.S.).

Then, there were speeches by representatives from the embassies of India, Australia, and the U.S. in Japan. In the speeches, they mentioned that the QUAD countries are required to further increase their presence and strengthen cooperation, with a Free and Open Indo-Pacific at the center, as the competition has intensified among nations over security and other global issues and the division of the world has deepened.

They were followed by a panel discussion comprising Dr. Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, External Affairs Minister of India, and experts from industry, government, and academia under the theme of the perspective of the Japan-India relationship and global collaboration. Participants discussed the enhancement of efforts in a wide range of areas, such as the circular economy, decarbonization, and digitalization, as challenges for the future in fields where new cooperation is expected, in addition to the strong points of companies in the two countries.

The forum attracted approximately 100 people from the public and private sectors of Japan, India, the U.S., and Australia, providing opportunities for them to exchange various opinions.

As Japan’s policy-based financial institution, JBIC will actively contribute toward overseas business development by Japanese companies and the improvement of the investment environment, by drawing on strong relationships with the government and government agencies, think tanks, and other entities of the host country.
