JBIC Holds Seminar on Energy Efficiency Potential in Thailand

The Representative Office in Bangkok of the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC), in collaboration with the Embassy of Japan in Thailand, held a seminar on energy efficiency potential in Thailand on June 17, 2026.

Objectives

The seminar was held against the backdrop of the growing importance of energy security in light of recent developments in the Middle East and increasing international calls for decarbonization. It aimed to share the potential and challenges of enhancing energy efficiency in Thailand and to explore future directions for Japan-Thailand cooperation.

Background

As the Thai government advances policies to achieve carbon neutrality and net-zero emissions, it has identified greenhouse gas emissions reduction and improved energy efficiency, particularly in the industrial sector, as key priorities. Efforts to enhance energy efficiency in the manufacturing sector are becoming increasingly critical for maintaining competitiveness.
Amid these policy developments, JBIC is advancing various initiatives under the framework of the Asia Zero Emission Community (AZEC). As part of these efforts, JBIC, together with the Embassy of Japan in Thailand and relevant organizations, launched the AZEC-SAVE (Smart and Advanced Value-chain for Environment) Platform (AZEC-SAVE Platform) in April 2025. JBIC is promoting decarbonization investments in Thailand, particularly in the energy conservation sector, by providing integrated support for technology introduction, human resource development, and financing through public-private collaboration.

Seminar Proceedings

The seminar brought together a large number of stakeholders, primarily from Japanese-affiliated companies in Thailand, and facilitated active exchanges of views, including post-seminar networking.
JBIC reported the results of its study on the potential for energy efficiency improvements in Thailand and presented promising sectors and future investment opportunities for enhancing energy efficiency. JBIC also highlighted specific examples of its support initiatives. These included a finance lease framework through TISCO Tokyo Leasing Co., Ltd., a Thai subsidiary of Tokyo Century Corporation, to promote the introduction of Japanese energy-efficient equipment in Thailand, as well as financial support under the POWERR Asia FAST Window, which was established and launched on May 15, 2026, in response to the impact of the current situation in the Middle East.
The seminar also featured presentations by representatives from Thai government agencies, including the Thailand Board of Investment and the Department of Alternative Energy Development and Efficiency, as well as private-sector companies such as Charoen Pokphand Foods, Ajinomoto (Thailand), Zeroboard, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific. These presentations provided insights into local policy developments, corporate initiatives, and practical solution case studies, and generated discussions on opportunities for Japan-Thailand cooperation in the fields of energy efficiency and decarbonization.
JBIC will continue to support efforts to improve energy efficiency and promote decarbonization in Thailand and across Asia through AZEC, including the initiatives of the AZEC-SAVE Platform, thereby supporting the overseas expansion of Japanese companies.
