The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC; Governor: HAYASHI Nobumitsu) signed on February 1 a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Sempra Infrastructure Partners, LP (Sempra Infrastructure) in the United States to promote a mutual partnership.
-
By signing the cooperative MOU with Sempra Infrastructure, JBIC aims to further its project structuring in enhancing the energy supply chain and promoting decarbonization in sectors such as hydrogen.
-
Sempra Infrastructure is a leading energy infrastructure company that is engaged in LNG and renewable energy business in North America. It has been a key sponsor of LNG projects, such as Cameron LNG, in which some Japanese companies participate. In addition, Sempra Infrastructure is an important partner for Japan’s initiatives to enhance the energy supply chain and realize a decarbonized society, as it is considering projects related to zero-emission fuels and joining the discussion with Japanese companies on CCS*1 and methanation*2 projects near the Cameron LNG site.
-
The Governments of Japan and the United States have recently signed a Memorandum of Cooperation for decarbonization and have deepened their relationship in the energy field through dialogue on energy security. JBIC and Sempra Infrastructure’s cooperation could serve as a means to further strengthen collaboration between the two countries.
-
As Japan’s policy-based financial institution, JBIC will continue to financially support the creation of business opportunities for Japanese companies and the securing of a stable supply of energy.
Note
- *1 Carbon dioxide Capture and Storage (CCS) is a technology that separates and captures carbon dioxide that would otherwise become a greenhouse gas and stores it in deep waterbeds or geological formations.
- *2 Methanation is a technology to produce synthetic methane (e-methane), the main component of natural gas, through the reaction of carbon dioxide and hydrogen.
