The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC; Governor: HAYASHI Nobumitsu) signed on March 25 a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the Brazilian Association of the Green Hydrogen Industry (ABIHV). The objectives of the MOU include promoting cooperation in the sector of hydrogen and its derivatives, including ammonia.
Brazil, one of the world's richest countries in terms of renewable energy, has a high potential for producing green hydrogen and other forms of renewable energy. In August 2024, the National Congress approved a bill incorporating tax incentives to establish a legal framework for low-carbon hydrogen. As a result, there are expectations for the promotion of the hydrogen industry and the acceleration of foreign investment in Brazil.
ABIHV is a hydrogen council that consists of major private companies in the energy and industrial sectors, and it makes policy recommendations to the Brazilian government and other bodies. Its aim is to promote economic and environmental sustainability and decarbonization by developing the green hydrogen industry in Brazil.
In Brazil, numerous companies, including Japanese firms, are exploring opportunities to enter the hydrogen and derivatives business. With this MOU between JBIC and ABIHV, under which the framework for collaboration between the two organizations is to be developed, JBIC aims to accelerate the structuring of projects for developing the supply chain of hydrogen and its derivatives and promote cooperation between member companies of ABIHV and Japanese companies.
As Japan's policy-based financial institution, JBIC will continue to contribute toward creating business opportunities for Japanese companies and securing a stable supply of resources for Japan through strengthened cooperation with important partners in the decarbonization sector.
