Loan for SMBC Aviation Capital Limited, an Aircraft Leasing Company in Ireland
Supporting Overseas Business Expansion of the Japanese Aircraft Leasing Industry

  • Region: Europe
  • Marine and Aerospace
  • Overseas Investment Loans
November 29, 2019
  1. The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC, Governor: Tadashi Maeda) signed today a loan agreement amounting up to USD1,000 million (JBIC portion) with SMBC Aviation Capital Limited (SMBCAC), which is invested in by Sumitomo Mitsui Finance and Leasing Co., Ltd. and Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation. The loan is co-financed with Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and others.

  2. The loan is intended to provide the funds for SMBCAC to procure aircrafts up to March 2024.

  3. As of October 2019, SMBCAC is ranked the fifth largest aircraft leasing company in the world, based on the volume of the aircraft it owns and manages. SMBCAC aims to secure a competitive edge in the aircraft leasing industry by further expanding the number of aircraft it owns and manages, to capture aircraft demand, which is expected to grow at a high level going forward. This loan, thus, will contribute to maintaining and strengthening the international competitiveness of Japanese industry by financially supporting the overseas expansion of SMBCAC.

  4. As Japan's policy-based financial institution, JBIC will continue to provide financial support for the overseas business development of Japanese companies by drawing on its various financial facilities and schemes for structuring projects and by performing its risk-assuming functions.
