The Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC, Governor: Tadashi Maeda) signed today an agreement for equity participation in Vertex Master Fund (SG) II LP (the Fund), established in the Republic of Singapore (Singapore).

The Fund will invest in venture capital funds around the world, including the United States, China, Southeast Asia, India and Israel. Vertex Master Fund II (GP) Pte. Ltd., which is under the auspices of Singapore fund manager Vertex Venture Holdings Ltd. (Vertex)*1 , established and manages this fund of funds. In addition to JBIC, Marubeni Corporation*2 , Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation and others also participate in the Fund. The total scale of the Fund, which was established in February 2019, is to reach USD730 million, while JBIC plans to invest up to USD20 million.

The industry is in the middle of the major structural change of the so-called Fourth Industrial Revolution driven by innovation in technology such as IoT and artificial intelligence (AI). Reflecting this trend, strategic measures to promote innovations is pursued by Japanese companies. The Fund intends to support Japanese companies strengthening the overseas business operations by offering them business opportunities with the portfolio companies of each investee funds. The equity participation by JBIC in the Fund is expected to contribute to maintaining and strengthening the international competitiveness of Japanese companies.

As Japan's policy-based financial institution, JBIC will continue to proactively support Japanese industries in maintaining and strengthening their international competitiveness by utilizing various financing tools, including equity participation and investments.
